Sunscreens protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun. They stop you from getting sunburns during hot summers or even on a beach. But do you know what sunscreens are made of and how they protect you? Let us find out...
*What do sunscreens contain?
Allsunscreenshave the same ingredients. What changes are the packing and the brand. Sunscreens contain 'zinc oxide' or 'titanium oxide'. Zinc or titanium oxides provide physical blocks from ultra-violet rays that are present in sun's rays. Besides these, sunscreens also contain PABA or para-aminobenzoic acid, Benzophenones, Anthranilates, Ecamsules, Cinnamates, Octyl Methoxycinnamate and cinoxate, which also help in protecting skin.
*How do sunscreens work?
All the above elements in sunscreen absorb the UV Rays from the sun and release it as heat in order to protect your skin from premature ageing, cancer and other ill effects of UV Rays
*Check for the level of SPF
Whenever you go to purchase a sunscreen, make sure you check for the SPF factor. SPF means 'sun protection factor'. The number indicated on the bottle of the sunscreen indicates how long can you stay out in the sun before getting a sunburn. The higher the SPF rate, the more effective the sunscreen will be.
Our skin has natural SPF depending on the amount of 'melanin' we have or how dark skinned we are. If you can stay out in the sun for say fifteen minutes, sunscreen with SPF 10 will help you stay out in the sun and resist sunburn for 10X, which means around 150 minutes extra.
Almost every sunscreen works on similar lines, what differs is the SPF factor. SPF is a broad spectrum of protection that is offered by the sunscreen. So every time you step out in the sun, you need to ensure that you wear your sun protective block to stop the ultra violet radiation from hitting your skin.
